THREE AND ONE

‘GOD SAID, “LET US MAKE MAN IN OUR IMAGE.”’ GENESIS 1.26

Some say it’s illogical. Some say it’s blasphemous. No one can fathom it to its depths. But the Bible consistently claims both of the following statements are true. First, there is only one God. Second, that the ‘Father’ is God, that the ‘Son’ is God and that the ‘Holy Spirit’ is God. And that the Father is not the Son or the Spirit, the Son is not the Father or the Spirit and that the Spirit is not the Father or the Son. The Bible consistently claims that God is both one and three, that he is ‘Trinity’. It’s deep.

ONE

The first words of the Bible, describing eternity before anything else existed, say, ‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth’. Before time, there was only God. Everything else is something he has made. A famous sentence from the book of Deuteronomy reads: ‘Hear O Israel, the LORD your God the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength’. The first of the Ten Commandments reads, ‘

So there is only one God. But in himself he is three.

THREE

Take a look at the quotation above, from the Book of Genesis (one of sixty-six books in the Bible). It comes from the account of the creation of the world. God is speaking to himself (at this stage he hasn’t created anyone else to speak to). But he doesn’t say, ‘Hmm, let me make man in my image’. He says, ‘Let us make man in our image’. So there is one God and one image, but he speaks of himself as ‘us’, not ‘me’. Then, about two thousand years ago, Jesus was born. And he claimed to be God. He said, ‘I and the Father are one’. And he claimed that he (God the Son) and God the Father had one name, but it wasn’t just their name, it is the ‘name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ The one name, God, belongs to all three. And the relationship between them is perfect love.

What this means is that any religion that doesn’t believe that Jesus is God is fake. It has to be, if Jesus really is God. And if you want to worship God, it’s obviously important to worship the real God.
